Vegetable Dyed Yarn And Fabric
I made some vegetable dyed yarn and fabric yesterday. I had a full and busy day. It ended with some sore hand and leg muscles. But the results were so awesome that all is forgotten and forgiven.
It all started with me wanting to make some amigurumi with organic yarns. I had some un-dyed organic cotton yarns at hand. But I know for a fact that toys look better when they are colorful. So I decided to dye them myself. I will share the process of how I did it later.
Let me show you my new hand dyed yarns and fabric. I used orange onion peels to dye some yarn. It turned out a beautiful light coffee brown color like this:
This is the cotton fabric I dyed using the onion peels. It turned out lighter than the yarn. :
I also used powdered madder to dye both cotton yarn and cotton fabric. The yarn turned out to be a lovely pastel pink. This is how the yarn looks.
The resulting cotton fabric looks lighter in shade as compared to the yarn. It is baby pink in color.
My third experiment was yarn and fabric dyed with beetroot. I wanted it ot turn red. But it ended up being pink again. But it is alightly different and brighter in shade than the earlier pink I got with madder.
The yarn turned out to be baby pink in color. It looks like this:
I am very happy with the resulting fabric color though. It turned out to be light and a much brighter pink shown below. :
I have placed all vegetable dyed fabrics together. I used plain cotton fabric and dyed it with different vegetables. From left to right: Pink fabric dyed with beet root, light brown or beige with onion peels, light pink fabric dyed with madder.
When I am experiementing with different media, I am like a mad scientist. I can try different methods tirelessly for hours on end.
Every scientist goes through various failed experiments. Yes, you guessed it right. I also tried to dye using spinach. But the dye did not hold onto the fabric and the yarn for some reason. So I had to let it go for my future experiements.
It took me an entire day to dye these fabrics amd yarns. I was at it from the time I woke up till the time I lied down on my bed. I wanted to rest just for a while. But I was so tired that I zoomed out into sleep. I was happily dreaming away about using my new yummy yarns today. The yarns smell so good with the aroma of the organic matter. :)
