Story Sundays – Spider Baby Blanket

Categories :

This Sunday, I’m going to tell you the story of my pattern, “Spider Baby Blanket“.

Spider Baby Blanket

I started this as a shawl for no one in specific in 2001. I used a very thin lace weight yarn to make it. It was one of those projects that I started and just couldn’t finish. So it stayed in my WIP bins for years. I remember buying this yarn in 2000. Every once in a while, say between 6  months to a year, I used to open those boxes, see how many WIPs I had & wondered when I would finish making it. I made a few rows of this shawl each time I got it out. Then got tired & bored because it just wouldn’t finish.

Finally, we came to know in November, 2011 that I was pregnant. My yet to be born daughter inspired me to finish this shawl which was now going to be converted into a blanket for her. I wanted to start a new blankie for her. But both my hands were swollen since my 5th month into pregnancy. Every time I held a hook in my hand, it used to to be very painful. So I decided to make this into a blankie to carry my bundle of joy. I finished it at my own slow pace finally. Let me tell you, I took a big sigh of relief that I finally finished making it.

The design/pattern stitch I used is called spider stitch. Such a fun design, if I would have made it in dk or worsted weight yarn, I bet I would have finished it way earlier than this. When I finished this blankie in May, 2012, I immediately wrote down it’s pattern so many more bundles of joy can be swaddled into this blankie. I added instructions also for changing it’s size into a bigger/ smaller one  so whoever wants to make a larger/ smaller blanket/ afghan can also make it.

What inspired me to make it? Well, that’s tough to say. I don’t really remember, but maybe it’s the pattern stitch or the fact that I just keep on tinkering with yarn all the time, experimenting with new ideas in crochet & in just about any craft. Ideas about new crochet designs keeps on running into my head all the time….yes… even in dreams.

I hope you enjoyed my story. If you would like to know the story of any of my other designs, please feel free to let me know & I’ll cover that story for you. :)
